Schouwburg Kortrijk

up to 830 paxThe 27th of November 1920 was a proud day for the citizens of Kortrijk: they were finally able to attend the inaugural performance in their brand-new theatre - the construction of which had been delayed for many years due to the First World War. It was worth the wait, because they got the best of both worlds: a cosy old-style, red-plush, jewel-box theatre, yet one that was equipped with cutting-edge technology. It had newfangled electric lights, an intricate system for changing scenery, and a parterre floor that could be raised to the stage level, so the room could also be used as an enormous ballroom or dining hall. The magnificent neo-Renaissance façade that blended in so well with the other buildings in the square in fact hid a core that was thoroughly modern.
Cultural hub
Over the past century, the building and its interior were adapted to the needs of the day, but a recent, intensive overhaul has restaured them to their original splendour. The rooms and halls once more look like the architect intended them to, and the decommissioned theatre equipment - including the moving parterre floor - is in working order again. A new, smaller theatre hall has been added for more intimate performances. But perhaps the most important thing: Schouwburg Kortrijk has reclaimed its rightful place as the cultural hub of the city of Kortrijk and the wider region.
Dedicated team
Schouwburg Kortrijk also has much to offer for your next congress or meeting. The inhouse café and the numerous cultural events make it a vibrant hub, right in the middle of a lively, buzzing, creative city. The largest room, the old jewel-box theatre, seats 830 people, but can be turned into an even larger room for dinners and dances thanks to the moving stage. The new theatre holds a maximun of 360 (standing) or 200 visitors (seated). A dedicated team of technicians will set up the rooms according to your wishes and will provide all the sound, lighting and projection equipment you need - including the equipment for hybrid meetings. Catering will be handled by external companies and is fully customizable. Schouwburg Kortrijk prides itself on its accessibility and the sustainable way in which it is run.
Looking for entertainment? Schouwburg Kortrijk is located in the centre of an attractive historic city with lots of restaurants, shops, cafés and museums. Be sure to visit the permanent exhibition in the Schouwburg, too. It's a remarkable collection of magnificent, historic theatre backdrops.
